The Block’s most recent rumpus room competition has ignited discussion about whether the judges’ decisions were fair. During Week 8, contestants presented a variety of designs, and the reveals showed rooms that were more cosy than others.
Courtney and Sev’s rumpus received high praise from the judges for its refined and welcoming atmosphere. This was partly due to Sev’s custom-built timber cabinet, which concealed both the television and a mini dishwasher for cleaning glasses. The room’s thoughtful use of space and materials earned strong marks.
Tayla and Rick’s rumpus in House 5 was a miss, with furniture awkwardly placed and ill-fitting in the large space, though they did earn points for colour. In contrast, Lisa and Rosco’s space was welcoming and well suited to lazing around.

Adam and Jolene’s laundry room was the only one equipped with heated floors, a detail highlighted by the Home Beautiful team as impactful in person. Their rumpus did not manage to impress the judges as much as they may have liked.
The judges’ reaction to Courtney and Sev’s room became a focal point of the episode. Darren Palmer called the rumpus his favourite room of The Block, though it was unclear whether he meant of the season or of any season. Host Scott Cam also shared that next week the contestants will receive $10,000 to redo any previously completed room, on top of completing their kids’ bedrooms, with the rooms to be re-judged and a further $10,000 awarded to the winners.
The layout of House 4 lends itself to a cocooning rumpus feel, while House 5, which is on the low side of the site, saw its rumpus miss the mark despite the larger space.
