The designer who built a career blending eras and textures recently discussed the moments, mentors, and small habits that influence her work. Her story includes a childhood discovery of abandoned camellias and the music that sets her daily rhythm.

From college orientation to design instinct

The professional explained that her career direction became clear at 18. During college orientation, her mother suggested interior design as a major, and the suggestion resonated.

Her method focuses on contrast—combining styles, colors, and textures to produce rooms that feel unexpected. This belief carries into her personal life, where she admires bold, stylish figures like Billy Baldwin, David Hicks, Veere Grenney, Robert Rufino, and the Rolling Stones.

Her passion for design began with a single memory: finding a neglected garden of camellias on an empty riverfront lot as a child. The flower became her personal emblem.

Rituals, regrets, and the rhythm of work

Her most productive hours begin before sunrise, alone in her office with a spotless desk. The morning soundtrack comes from her colleague Liv, known in the studio as “DJ XOXO.”

For her, design is more than a profession. “I notice details everywhere, even when I’m not working.” Her free time often involves visiting grungy old antiques malls in the South or imagining her ideal project: a boutique hotel with no restrictions.

The 1950s hold a special appeal. She appreciates the era’s optimism and the “American Dream” spirit, along with its music. Yet her tastes aren’t limited to one period. She constantly observes contrasts in architecture and atmosphere, storing them for future projects.

Her team plays a key role in her success. “My decorating superpower… My team. You are only as good as those around you who support you and inspire you to be better.” This belief extends to her personal life, where she values simple pleasures like spaghetti Bolognese, a good glass of red wine, fresh flowers in an antique vase, her golden retrievers, and her faith.

If she ever won the lottery, she would donate everything—to people and animals in need. The choice reflects her broader outlook: trust your instincts. “Best piece of style/decorating advice I can offer… Be confident in your choices. Go with your gut and what makes your toes tingle.”

Black remains her favorite crayon in the box, though she insists every shade has its place. The preference mirrors her approach to design: strong, direct, yet layered with meaning.

Her childhood discovery of those camellias still guides her. The moment taught her to see potential in overlooked places, a lesson she applies to every interior design project today.
